Hepatitis B is a disease of the liver caused by a virus. It can be prevented by vaccination. GSK’s Engerix-B is one of the vaccines used to prevent hepatitis B. It is used routinely in many countries around the world, including the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. It has been noticed that people with type 2 diabetes are more prone to hepatitis B than other people. Therefore, in the USA, the authorities now recommend all people with type 2 diabetes to be protected against hepatitis B through vaccination. While Engerix-B helps to prevent hepatitis B in healthy subjects, the actual individual response to the vaccine varies between people. Engerix-B has not yet been fully tested in people with diabetes.
The purpose of this study is to test how the body reacts to Engerix-B in people with or without type 2 diabetes.
